Writing Lab: showing and telling in "Offside" by Savage7289

The first advice you get when you try to write a story is "show, don't tell."
You have a plot, you think that your characters have a very interesting path to
go, and you're ready to follow them on it, step by step.
You already have your good reasons to write and read your story and probably
your best friend will read it too - if (s)he's a very kind friend, but if you want to
involve other readers, you must provide them their good reasons to spend their
time reading your stuff.
Keep in mind that readers don't like to be schooled: e.g., if you say that a character
is a jerk, you are telling your readers how they are supposed to feel; you are giving
them your opinions. Instead, if you show your character acting in a jerkish way,
your readers will decide on their own how they judge your character's behavior.

I don't know what I need to tell you about this fic, because more than likely, you're already reading it. But, on the very rare chance that you're not seriously addicted to this like freakin' crack, here's some info for ya...so you can become obsessed with the rest of us!

First off, my girl Savage has written an Edward here that I just love. I said it from the first chapter, I love this boy. This might be weird to some of you, because Edward's isn't exactly the nicest guy. He's got a huge ego, being the soccer star of his high school...he's an asshole to pretty much everyone, teachers included...gets any girl he wants, when he wants...yeah, and everyone loves and kisses his ass.

I freakin' loved him!
However, the new girl Bella isn't falling for his shit. She isn't interested in becoming a conquest or being his friend. And although she thinks she sees good points in him from time to time, he continues to change her mind rather quickly.

Ok, I’m going to keep it real. I LOVE high school fics. There is something about that time in my own life that I readily identify with. I fell in love with Mr. apolloandbaby when I was 17 so seeing that new love bloom makes my heart pitter patter, but enough about me and let’s get on to my rec of the week.

Offside by Savage7289 is a story of Edward who is the star keeper of the Forks High School soccer team who has one thing on his mind and that is being star keeper for the pro European team, the Real Volturi. That is his focus and nothing is to get in the way.
The journey with these two is amazing. We learn why Edward is so focused and why Bella is so guarded. I’ve laughed, cried, flailed, and swooned. The chapters are shorter but the updates are often. Check out Offside and fall in love with it like I have. ♥

Fics I Love

These are fics I love and would rec without hesitation. Note: many of my most favorite fics are no longer publicly available. I've made the choice not to include them here because I've been so disappointed to hear wonderful things about a particular story only to find it's no longer around.

Why this fic pwns Artistic wonder: This fic is just starting out, but I am already loving it. Soccerward is hot with a temper, an attitude problem, and a secret love of drawing. We’ve only had a glance at Bella, but I’m looking forward to what’s to come. I love everything that Savage7289 has written, and with the fast updates, I don’t need to wait long for my next fix.

I want to share two new WIPs with you all. I know many of you are probably on board with these fics because they come from authors we’ve Spotlit before, but I can’t *not* mention them – I’m enjoying them way too much!! The first is Offside by savage7289. This story popped up in my inbox a couple weeks ago and I had to start reading. Immediately. Not only am I fan of savage’s stories in general, I’m a huge soccer fan. Any hint of Soccerwardand I’m there!

As if Soccerward wasn’t enough to draw me in, this is a high school fic and y’all know how I love those! This story is moving quickly, updating in small chapters often several times a day, and there are already several distinctive backstories that will truly tug at your heartstrings. Meanwhile, as a reader, you can’t decide if you want to punch Edward or shove him in the infamous janitors’ closet and make out with him! I love that we’re seeing that Bella is so much more than meets the eye…I’m excited to see where this one goes. If you’re not reading along, jump on board! The quick, daily updates make the waiting so much more manageable.

This is owning me right now. It's a WIP, but moving along quickly. She updates pretty much daily, sometimes more than once, like The Plan. Edward is a super soccer player, Carlisle is his domineering, asshole father. Bella is so not interested in this conceited jock ... Soccerward is a fun, sexy, but angsty story by the awesome author of Hide + Drink, one of my personal favorites. Get in there and read, gals. The story is really heating up.

I started reading this fic a little over a week ago, just after finding CBWR? on her blog. I didnt waste any time starting on another one of Savage's stories as i have pretty much read most of her work in the past, and im glad for that because ive been hooked ever since. Im always looking to see if shes updated a new chapter wherever i am, even searching on my phone when im away from my computer.
I really like the fact that the story is fairly simple, in a good way, of course, and that its an easy read as i can always pick up where i left off reading, without having to remember or think too much about whats been happening. Or maybe its because shes frequently posting new chapters all the time... Her chapters are short, but she makes up for it as she updates atleast once a day, if not more sometimes.
Lately ive been finding myself reading twilight fics that havnt been updates in months, if not years, which i dont think they are ever going to be updated, let alone completed, so its nice to read something from a talented, dedicated and reliable author, (not that im saying other writers arent dedicated nor reliable, because i know everyones got a life and such. I do understand that, i just hate the wait).
Anyway, for anyone who's looking for anything worth reading, or happens to be waiting around for other stories to be updated, try giving Offside a chance, or even any other fics by Savage7289.

I just started Offside, about 10 chapters into it and man oh man do I want to punch Carlisle in the face!!!!! Edward isn't bothering me too much as of yet, I mostly feel bad for him
And I think quite a few of us read CBWR? which was very good! I like these stories with short chapters that update daily, gives me something to look forward to
